BRITTANY CHARD PHOTOGRAPHY
NEWBORN SESSION GUIDE
WHEN TO BOOK:
It is best to pre-book during your pregnancy to ensure that you don't miss out. I can only pre-book a couple of due dates a week. This is to ensure I have enough time in case a few bubs arrive early or late. If you were not able to pre-book, please call me on 0400898600 as I may still have a spot available.
When you book, I will mark your due date in my diary and then wait to hear from you. Once bub has arrived please contact me, and we will organise a suitable time and date for your session. The best time to shoot is during the first 14 days (seven days is perfect) while your bub still naturally curls up. Of course, I understand sometimes it's just not possible to have your shoot this early. If this is the case, please don't worry. I can still photograph your new addition, I just can't promise any particular poses.
TIPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SESSION:
If possible, try to keep bub awake during the morning before your session.
Please take your time to feed at the studio, so we can get bubs into a deep sleep ready to be photographed
Avoid dressing your bub in clothes that pull over the head for the car trip over, that way if bub is still asleep when you arrive we can try to undress them without waking and get straight into taking photos (e.g. add an extra blanket instead of putting a singlet on).
Please don't worry about flaky skin, baby acne, jaundice, rashes or scratches as these can be corrected in post-production.
Tip: I find coconut oil is great for softening flaky skin.
If you are feeding with breast milk, try not to eat foods that are spicy, likely to upset bubs tummy or drink coffee leading up to your shoot as these can effect bubs moods and sleep patterns.
PHOTOS WITH MUM AND DAD?
while you don't have to have photographs with your newborn, and I understand you may not be feeling your best, I have found that those images often become the most cherished, especially by your bub. You will love your bub so much that you will spend your days and nights taking photos of them awake, asleep, yawning, having a bath, eating, cuddling with siblings and even with dad. You will find there will be so many images by the time your bub turns one, but sadly not many of them will have you in them. So I encourage you to have your photo taken too and will try to make it as quick and easy as possible.
It's pretty special to have photos of the kids together, this is offered with all my newborn sessions. If both Mum and Dad can't make it to the session, have a family member or friend come along to keep the older kids entertained. A few small toys, a portable DVD player or books can be a great way to keep them occupied and relaxed in the studio while they wait for their turn.
WHAT TO WEAR:
Wear lots of layers and dress for 28 degrees.
Avoid strong/bold patterns, logo's and prints.
Bring along two options. Choose light colours and tones that are similar without being the same (e.g. everyone in soft creams, beiges and pastel blues.) Soft neutral colours are best to keep your bub as the main focus.
Keep your hair and makeup soft and natural.
WHAT TO BRING:
Please bring water, snacks, and lunch for parents and kids.
Treats to use as bribery for siblings can work wonders. Try to bring treats that won't make as much mess on little one's faces, grapes over strawberries, jube lollies over chocolate, etc. This way we don't have to add annoying face cleaning to the mix if your little one already isn't keen to be in photos.
Formula and/or bottles if bottle feeding. Photo shoots can be hard work, and babies often feed a little more than usual, so bring extra. I have a bottle warmer here that you can use.
Extra nappies, wipes etc.
Dummy, if you are using one.
Any special blankets, hats or sentimental items.
A change of clothes for everyone, just in case any little accidents occur during family photos.
I GET PEED ON... ALOT!!
As I prefer to photograph bubs in their own skin, please don't panic if your bub decides to use the blankets (or me_ as a nappy. This is natural and is expected. Please don't feel embarrassed or worry when this happens, because all bubs do it. I get peed on in most sessions!
I wash all of my props and blankets between each session. This is one of the reasons I only schedule one newborn session a day.
WHAT YOUR SESSION PACKAGE INCLUDES:
A $500 session fee is due before your session and includes:
$500 credit towards your final package
Two to four hours of custom styled photography in my Upper Ferntree Gully home studio
Props - I have plenty of little hats, headbands, wraps, outfits, and blankets here for styling, and welcome your input.
I will set the bean bag up prior to you arriving at the studio, so if you have any particular colours you would prefer or like to avoid, please let me know before the day of the photo shoot
20+ final images presented in an online gallery for selection and purchase.
A bonus announcement video (available to all bubs under 14 days old).
I allow two to four hours for each session. Please be aware that it may not be a quick session. While four hours is generally not needed, babies can be very unpredictable with sleeping and eating, and it's important everyone is relaxed and no one feels rushed. Please don't stress if your bub is not cooperating, as there is plenty of time.
Please keep in mind babies can sense if their Mum or Dad is not comfortable, which can make it take longer.

Sessions may be rescheduled due to illness or injury. Please contact me as soon as possible before your session on 0400898600 if you suspect one of your family members is unwell and we can make another time.
While I am fully immunized, working with unimmunized babies means it is incredibly important that I don't pass on any illnesses to yours or anyone else's bub, so your cooperation in this would be appreciated.
If I do get sick, I will postpone all scheduled sessions until I am well again.
There is no charge to reschedule due to illness or injury, however, once a session has begun there will be a $100 charge to re-book.
